Living Within Your Means: What Does it Mean to You?

February 24th, 2007

We’ve all heard the phrase “Living within your means”. The question is what does it actually mean? Does it mean that you only spend what you have on hand? Does it mean you can take out personal loans, secured loans, or unsecured loans as long as you think can cover them? There are many ways to approach this question, and in the end only you can make this determination. However, I’d like to give you my take on it.

You Can’t Push a Pig into a Truck: Change is all about Choice

February 24th, 2007

While the title of this post may not be familiar to you, here’s a saying that you might be more familiar with: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. In other words, you can show the horse where the water is, but the horse has to make the decision to drink or not. This saying applies to almost any workplace, as it is a basic tenet of communication. There are multiple leadership styles out there, but no matter what style you employ, if you want to get your team to do something right you need to convince them it’s the right thing to do. “Right” is highlighted there because someone can perform a task even if they don’t’ agree with it, but you most likely won’t get their best effort. This is also the point that Glenn Ray makes in his entertaining parable below. My thoughts are immediately following the article in the My Comments section.

Tip of the Day 2/24/07 - Check out “The Ultimate Gift”

February 24th, 2007

“The only way you can truly get more out of life for yourself is to give part of yourself away.”

This sounds like a pretty good message, and one that is refreshing amidst all of the problems that our society faces today. Coincidentally, it’s also what the new movie, The Ultimate Gift, is based on. This movie premiers on March 9th, and is the screen adaptation of the book of the same name. In a nutshell, a trust fund baby inherits a fortune when his grandfather dies. However, before he can claim that fortune, his grandfather has laid out 12 tasks (the “gifts”) that he must accomplish. The goal is to give the grandson insight not only into himself but into the world around him, to find out what’s really important in life.

Besides the good premise, there are a number of well-known actors in this movie including Abigail Breslin from “Little Miss Sunshine” (shown below in a scene from the movie).

  America’s Most Dangerous Airports

February 24th, 2007

I don’t do a lot of business traveling via flying, however this article from Forbes via MSNBC caught my attention. The reason is simple: When I fly, I don’t really think about the fact that it could be dangerous. However, as it turns out, the most dangerous part of flying occurs at landing and takeoff. Based on this fact, the researchers at Forbes used the following criteria to determine the 10 most dangerous airports in the country:

1.) Airport size
2.) Number of takeoffs and landings
3.) Severity of the incidents that occurred according to the FAA

Topping the list were airports in Nevada and California, specifically North Las Vegas (Northtown) and Long Beach/Dougherty Field. These are two smaller airports who help relieve congestion at Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Thankfully, I didn’t see Dulles or National on there, so it looks like I’m safe in D.C. This article brings up a number of interesting points, I highly suggest you check it out to see if your airport of choice is as safe as you think.
