Think Mondays are Bad? Wednesdays are Worse
Monday…the one day of the week that everybody agrees is the worst day of the week. Everybody that is except me. Oh sure, Monday is no walk in the park, and it’s no Friday, but I think there is a day more sinister, more diabolical, and more insidious than Monday. What day could this be? Brace yourself: It’s Wednesday. I’ll give you a second to pull yourself together.
That’s right, in my opinion, Wednesday is the worst day of the week. It’s so evil that it slips under most people’s radar, just because it’s in the middle of the work week. Don’t be fooled though, it is the worst day of the week. To prove it, I present the following three reasons (in no particular order):
1. You can’t talk about the previous or upcoming weekend - When you get to Wednesday, you’ve most likely already discussed everything that happened the previous weekend on Monday or Tuesday. However, it is still too early to talk about what you’re planning for the next weekend since you still have Thursday and Friday to go. This leaves a large gap of conversation around the water cooler. Awkward silences, conversation about the weather, all horrors too grisly to imagine.
2. You’re too far away from the next weekend and you KNOW it - Wait a minute, aren’t Monday and Tuesday farther away than Wednesday from the next weekend? Technically, this is correct. However, I’ve found that on Monday and Tuesday, people are still somewhat coming down from the previous weekend. It’s not till Wednesday that they realize there are still two full work days left in the week, three if you count Wednesday! This is a seriously depressing thought, usually immediately followed by a three hour meeting with your boss about how much work is left to do that week.
3. Work is in full swing - If you think of the work week (M-F) as a bell curve, then sitting at the very peak of this curve would be Wednesday. This is when your workload will most likely be the heaviest. How so? Monday and Tuesday are spent ramping up your work, and Thursday and Friday work tends to slow down as the weekend approaches. This leaves Wednesday as the balance between ramping up and ramping down, i.e. the top of the curve. While there are exceptions to this (such as deadlines for projects, etc.), I’ve found this to be generally the case during a normal work week.
In summary, on Wednesday you are at your busiest. Not only are you busy, but you don’t have a lot of reason to take a break and talk to your co-workers simply because there is a lack of topics to discuss. To top it all off, you’re not really close to the weekend so you can’t even start thinking about it. This exactly why Wednesday is the worst day of my week, what do you think?
